A little ways north of me is the Worlds End Highway, that used to be a lovely dirt road but has now been paved into submission. You’ll find Worlds End on the map, just a whisker north of Hallelujah Hills. I was moved to write a poem about it about forty years ago but it was the kind of tripe you expect at that age so was used to light a campfire.
Next time I wander that way I’ll make sure to play it your song. I think the place would appreciate it.
Oh! Yes, let’s go together to the Worlds End Highway and Hallelujah Hills! Wow. I am so very happy that you love my song. Best news of the morning! I’m seeing Freda today and we will drink our tea and think of you!
I have tears in my eyes reading this, Jeni. I'm so thrilled to have a teeny, tiny part in the writing of the song--but let it be known to all that it is all Jeni! As you know, I love this song so much and I love it even more now that I know more about where it came from. Oh talented friend of mine, I bow down to you!
That’s one big-@$$ doll! Loved the pics of old signs! I remember my mom used to buy Sealtest Ice Milk, kinda like diet ice cream of the 70’s, let’s just say, not the best. 😉. ❤️ the pic of u n dad. The song hit all my emotions. 🫶🏻. Still fighting jet-lag, so forgive any mis-spellings or punctuation miscues 🥱.
A GEM of a song, Jeni! Wow! Powerful, poignant, and the lyrics touched me deeply. I needed to hear this (uniquely American) goodness today. Was teary by the end. I have a feeling your Da is cheering you on from the great beyond.
This is terrific, Jeni! Love this song so much. And I so agree that Route 11 is a treasure trove, as are so many of those rural roads. I, too, just love looking at the old signs. I wish I’d had a handy cell phone camera so many times back in the day. One of my favorites was a beat up marquee type sign outside a little car repair shop in WV: “Jesus Saves! Complete tune up $25.” Or in SE KY the mystifying and hilarious “Fried bolonga (sic) sandwiches.” 😂😂 Great times!
Oh! I love these memories. It took us three days to get to Mawmaw’s because we agreed we’d stop and look at anything and everything we wanted on that drive. So often, you just have to keep on driving. Huge hugs to you!
Only just started following you a couple of weeks ago at most, but this is the first musical post I’ve seen. I am from this area and most of my family still lives there. Next time you’re around, look up “The Crooked Road.” It’s the route of traditional music that runs from The Harvester in Rocky Mount, Virginia west thru Galax all the way up thru the mountains to West Virginia. A lot of history and song for you there. Do not miss the Friday night Jamboree at the Floyd Country Store! I think you will feel at home 🥰
I’m so glad to have you along! I know the Crooked Road well as my friend’s husband worked for them organizing the map and concerts for many years. And I also have friends at the country store in Floyd! It’s such a great community. Though we were always a bit sorry that Tazewell County, Virginia, didn’t make it onto the Crooked Road Map. We’re still hoping though!
The best tears...! All while I can feel your dad smiling. Thank you, Jeni. 💛🌿
Thank you so much for listening, Elizabeth. 🙏🧡💗
I love this song , Jeni.
